SADLER SUFFERS EARLY RACE DAMAGE TO DASH DARLINGTON HIGH HOPES
DARLINGTON, S.C. – With a top-10 starting position and fast practice times before the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway, Elliott Sadler and the No. 19 McDonald’s Dodge team felt confident going into Saturday night’s race.
However, heading into Turn 1 on lap two, while running where he started in seventh on the newly-paved "Track Too Tough to Tame", Sadler and Tony Stewart made contact. Stewart was outside of Sadler and the two of them went up into the outside wall.
Sadler’s Dodge suffered heavy right front damage and headed to the garage for repairs. The McD’s team leapt into action repairing and replacing damaged parts while their disappointed driver was left to stand by and watch. It took them 120 laps, but the crew sent Sadler back out with an entirely new right front wheel housing, splitter and repaired right front fender and right-rear quarter panel.
A combination of being so many laps down and very little attrition left Sadler and the team finishing in 42nd place. That dropped them from 25th to 28th in points.
ELLIOTT SADLER QUOTES
"I just made a huge mistake. I just went in too low into Turn 1. I was actually trying to give Tony (Stewart) more room and I just got loose under him and spun up into him. I’ve never had any problem with Tony. I know he’s pretty upset with me right now; it’s my fault. I apologize to all of his fans, I apologize to McDonalds. There were a lot of McDonald’s people here tonight and I didn’t give them much of a good show".
"I told the guys on the radio after the race that I appreciate all their work and I owe them one. The All-Star race is this weekend and I can’t think of better way to make it up than racing our way in and going for the win".
RODNEY CHILDERS QUOTES
"We busted our butts to get that car fixed and back out there so we could finish this race. That’s one thing about this team that just keeps impressing me – they never give up no matter what happens. It was an all-hands effort to get back out there so we could compete".
“Our test in Charlotte this week was pretty good (posted fastest time), so we’re just going to race our way into the All-Star Race and go win that million dollars".
Kyle Busch won the race with Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards rounding out the top-three. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will trade points for pride this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with the running of the Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night.
